In the published dissertation (1910), there are a number of references to Koebe and his work in the footnotes. One of these is unusual. "While I was writing this paper," Courant noted on page 5, "there appeared ... a paper by Mr. Koebe, the essential content of which is the proof of this same theorem, which was first formulated by Hilbert as a general theorem. Mr. Koebe's proof is also based -on Hilbert's idea of employing the minimum property of the flow potential and agrees further with my proof of the convergence of these potentials.

Even at the very end of his life, whenever he mentioned Haar, he always mentioned the great vineyards of Haar's father. He told me that all the students of his day were convinced that Alfred Haar was the one of their number who would leave the deepest mark on mathematics. After the success in the seminar, it became Courant's ambition to associate with Haar and his friends. In spite of their comparative wealth, they were not inaccessible to him. German students, even wealthy ones, lived modestly.

Physics was represented in Gottingen during Courant's student days by Woldemar Voigt and Eduard Riecke, both of whom antedated Klein on the faculty. Their presentation of the subject was as classical as the presentation in Breslau had been. Neither was of the stature of Hilbert, Minkowski, and Klein. The impetus which would make Gottingen one of the great physics centers of the world would come from the mathematicians rather 21 Courant than from the physicists. Courant ignored Riecke after the first semester and took relatively few courses from Voigt, whom he nevertheless admired very much as a person and as a musician.
