The danger associated with the emergence of this archetypal form is inflation. But it is not necessary for analysts to feel any particular merit when this comes into the patient’s consciousness, since awareness of the self is no individual achievement but a historical process, as Jung has clearly shown in ‘Answer to Job’. The objection to being seen as a god is surely as narcissistic and dangerous as being inflated by it; indeed it reveals a negative inflation. ’ This question has behind it the idea that the self is the prime mover behind every analytic procedure, and is a recognition that the patient’s ‘projection’ has a basis of truth in it.

It is commonly believed that consciousness is one of the great aims of analysis, but this is only partly true if the analysis is based on the self. Then consciousness is the instrument we use in the analytic process; it does not embrace the whole of it any more than the self can be identified with consciousness. As I have suggested elsewhere, the self is a dynamic structure, having two definable functions (cf. Fordham, 1957a); it integrates and deintegrates, and I have shown that this view of it can be used to explain how consciousness is produced and how an ego is formed in early infancy.

A female patient was attacking and at the same time trying to seduce me because I would not stop ‘being an analyst’ and live with her so that she could have day-today ‘ordinary’ relations with me. She attacked me as unfeeling, heartless, and indifferent to her distress. It was as fruitless for me to deny this as it would be for me to inaugurate a more personal kind of approach, to meet her outside the analysis, for instance, or to start those personal confessions for which she asked because she was the victim of a projected hermaphrodite figure.
